    Learning
    Pathways

Compare the Standard and Express learning pathways to choose the timeline that best matches your availability, learning commitment, and career goals.

Dutch Language Training Timeline for Nursing Jobs in the Netherlands

Every candidate follows the same curriculum, learning outcomes, and professional preparation framework. The difference lies in the pace of study. Depending on your availability and personal commitments, you may choose either the Standard Learning Pathway or the Express Learning Pathway. Both pathways prepare candidates towards the same professional destination in the Netherlands.

    Standard
    11–14 Months
    Continue Working While Learning

Ideal for candidates who wish to continue their current employment while studying Dutch. Flexible learning schedules allow steady progression through language training while balancing professional and personal commitments. Completion timelines depend on consistency and individual learning pace.

    Express
    4.5–7 Months
    Dedicated Full-Time Learning

Designed for candidates who choose to focus primarily on Dutch language learning. This accelerated pathway provides an immersive learning experience that supports faster progression towards B1-level professional communication readiness. Availability depends on employer demand, candidate readiness, and intake schedules.

Important: Both learning pathways lead to the same professional outcome. The choice depends on your availability, preferred pace of learning, employer requirements, and intake planning at the time of application.
    04
    Immigration

Understand the Dutch visa process, residence permits, work authorisation, and family reunification pathway before relocating to the Netherlands.

Netherlands Work Visa and Residence Permit Process for Nurses

International nurses selected through the Hexallt Abroad Netherlands Nursing Pathway follow a structured immigration process before beginning employment. The employer manages the required work authorisation while candidates receive guidance throughout the relocation journey. Understanding each stage helps candidates prepare confidently for moving to the Netherlands.

    Step 01
    MVV (Provisional Residence Permit)

Your journey begins with the MVV, a long-stay entry visa issued before travelling to the Netherlands. It allows you to enter the country for employment and forms the first stage of your long-term residence process.

    Step 02
GVVA (Combined Residence and Work Permit)

Before your departure, your employer submits the required residence and work permit application to the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). After arriving in the Netherlands, you collect your GVVA residence permit from the IND, allowing you to legally live and work in the country.

    Step 03
    Family Reunification

Eligible candidates may apply for family reunification in accordance with Dutch immigration regulations. Many professionals choose to complete their initial settlement, including securing suitable accommodation and other practical arrangements, before bringing their family to the Netherlands. Visa guidance and application support are available for candidates who would like additional assistance during the process.

    Step 04
    Schengen Area Travel

Once your Dutch residence documents have been issued, you may travel within the Schengen Area in accordance with applicable immigration regulations, allowing easier travel across many European countries during your stay in the Netherlands.

Important: Immigration procedures are governed by Dutch law and may change over time. Final visa approval, residence permits, work authorisation, and family reunification eligibility are determined solely by the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) and other relevant authorities.
    05
    Career
    Pathway

Follow the complete Hexallt pathway—from the VIARA Assessment and Dutch language training to employer selection, relocation, and progression towards Registered Nurse (BIG) status in the Netherlands.

Step-by-Step Netherlands Nursing Career Pathway for International Nurses

This structured pathway combines professional assessment, Dutch language learning, cultural integration, employer selection, immigration guidance, and professional recognition into one coordinated journey towards Registered Nurse (BIG) status in the Netherlands.

    01

    VIARA Initial Assessment

Every journey begins with the VIARA (Vocational Integration and Role Adaptability Assessment). Rather than testing academic nursing knowledge, VIARA evaluates behavioural compatibility, communication approach, structured thinking, adaptability, and professional response patterns required for success in Dutch healthcare.

    02

    Dutch A1 – Band 1 (Foundation Stage)

Candidates begin with the first band of Dutch A1 to experience the learning methodology before making a long-term commitment. This stage provides practical exposure to the language, learning system, study expectations, and personal learning pace.

    03

    Registration & Full Learning Pathway

After completing A1 – Band 1, candidates decide whether to continue. Formal registration is completed, and progression continues through Dutch A1, A2, and B1 within the structured learning pathway.

    04

    Parallel Professional Recognition

Professional recognition begins alongside language training. Educational qualifications are evaluated through the IDW process, followed by the Certificate of Competence application. Completing these stages early significantly reduces the remaining recognition process after arrival in the Netherlands.

    05

    Dutch Language & Cultural Integration

Candidates progress through Dutch A1, A2, and B1 using a curriculum designed for internationally qualified nurses. Alongside general language learning, the programme introduces healthcare terminology, workplace communication, and cultural understanding relevant to professional nursing practice in the Netherlands.

    06

    Employer Selection & Interview

Once candidates demonstrate the required language proficiency and professional readiness, employer interviews are arranged. Interview preparation and guidance are provided throughout this stage, while final selection remains the employer's decision.

    07

    Immigration & Relocation

Following employer selection, immigration documentation, work authorisation, relocation planning, and onboarding are coordinated. Candidates receive guidance throughout the transition to the Netherlands.

    08

BIG Registration & Registered Nurse Status

After arriving in the Netherlands, candidates complete the remaining professional assessment requirements for BIG registration. Because the IDW evaluation and Certificate of Competence have already been completed, only the final registration stages remain before progressing to Registered Nurse (BIG-registered) status.

Important: This pathway integrates language learning, professional recognition, employer readiness, and immigration preparation into one structured process. Progression depends on individual performance, employer requirements, and the processing timelines of the relevant Dutch authorities.
