One of the biggest reasons Indian students choose to study in the U.S. is the opportunity to gain real-world work experience and potentially settle long-term. This article explains how students at Concordia University, St. Paul (CSP) can legally work during and after their studies through OPT, STEM OPT, and eventually the H-1B visa.
1. What Is OPT?
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary work authorization for international students after graduation.
Available to all F-1 students
Can be used for 12 months
Job must be related to your field of study
You can apply up to 90 days before or 60 days after completing your program
What Is STEM OPT?
If your program is STEM-designated (e.g., MS in Data Analytics, Computer Science), you may apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, making your total OPT period 3 years.
Eligibility:
You must be on a degree from the STEM Designated Degree Program List
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify
You must file the extension before your regular OPT ends
Working During Studies (CPT)
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows you to work or intern while studying, if the work is related to your program and approved by CSP.
Typically used for internships
Available after completing one academic year
Requires formal approval and documentation
Transitioning to H-1B
The H-1B visa allows U.S. employers to hire foreign graduates for specialty roles.
Requires employer sponsorship
Selected through an annual lottery system
If approved, status begins from October 1 of that year
OPT gives you time to work while you apply for H-1B
STEM OPT = up to 3 H-1B attempts
